National Heritage Week 2021

A tragic incident involving an Annascaul businessman, newly returned from Boston, reveals the closely knit nature of a West Kerry community and their close links to the United States in the early twentieth century.

With the assistance of newspaper reports, old documents and the generosity of the Annascaul community we are piecing together the story of John Ashe who died at the roadside near Lispole over a century ago.

This is not just a story of the past, however, as his descendants and relatives still form part of today’s Annascaul – even if they don’t live there.
